Ed Reed had been mostly off our news radar until Tuesday, when he dropped a few nuggets during an interview with 105.7 The FAN in Baltimore.

Reed, who has contemplated retirement this offseason and recently estimated he’s at about 35 percent after hip surgery, told “The Norris & Davis Show” he has contacted the Ravens about a new contract.

“I’ve never talked to the media about my contract situation. I’m not making it a big deal,” said Reed, who has three years remaining on a six-year contract extension. “[But] I think it needs to be taken care of.”

According to The Baltimore Sun, Reed is scheduled to earn $6 million in 2010, $6.5 million in 2011 and $7.2 million in 2012.

Reed said he told the Ravens he would play this season, and then seemed to indicate his thinking for beyond 2010.

“I’m not going to ask the Ravens about anything if I’m not going to play any much longer,” Reed said. “I appreciate the opportunity that the Ravens have given me. … I’m not about to ask them for anything if I’m not going to be playing. Right now my focus is to get myself back. … I’m coming back for at least for one more year.”

Reed said he’s not rushing to return from his surgery and is shooting to be back for the season opener, but then admitted he “wasn’t sure” that was a realistic timetable. He didn’t shoot down the idea that it could be October, November or December until he returns.
