The Washington Redskins waived Joey Galloway and signed rookie Terrence Austin off the practice squad in a switch of wide receivers, the team announced Saturday.

Galloway, in his first season with the Redskins, had 12 receptions for 173 yards in 10 games, but he failed to emerge as a factor on offense. He was a starter when the season began, slid to the No. 3 wideout after a few games, then was benched recently after a poorly run route led to an interception.


Galloway, 39, has 701 catches for 10,950 yards and 77 touchdowns during his 17 NFL seasons. A standout at Ohio State, Galloway was selected by the Seattle Seahawks in the first round of the 1995 NFL Draft. He spent five seasons in Seattle before making stops with the Dallas Cowboys (2000-03), Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2004-08) and New England Patriots (2009).

Galloway signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers near the end of last season, but he didn't play in a game.

Austin was a seventh-round pick by the Redskins out of UCLA and spent the first 11 weeks of his rookie season on the practice squad.

The Redskins came close to activating Austin before last Sunday's game against the Tennessee Titans, with wide receiver Brandon Banks battling knee problems, according to The Washington Post. Austin traveled with the team to Nashville but never was activated, as Banks played in the Redskins' 19-16 victory.

Banks is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Minnesota Vikings.
