Giants WR Steve Smith is entering the final year of his rookie deal, but as of right now nothing new is happening on the contract front, according to his agent.

The New York Post describes Smith as ”adamant but not militant” about securing a new deal, but reports the Pro Bowler will report on time when the Giants open training camp on August 1.

Smith is entering the final year of a rookie contract that will pay him $550,000 in 2010, but like many other players is caught in the whitewash of the uncapped season with no collective bargaining agreement. His contract is limited by the 30-percent rule imposed on teams. The Giants could circumvent the rule with inflated signing bonuses, but many teams have shown reluctance to hand out large sums of guaranteed money.

“I understand it’s making it tough on both sides,” Smith told The Post. “It’s bad timing for me to be doing well in the National Football League.”

Still, Smith didn’t hide the fact he’s eyeballing the contract of Packers WR Greg Jennings, who signed a four-year extension worth $26.8 million, including $16 million guaranteed, according to The Post.

“I deserve to at least be getting what these other players in the NFL are getting, like a Greg Jennings, at least,” Smith said.
